Latvian Design Achievements’ Exhibition at Budapest Design Week
The exhibition “BALTIC DESIGN NOW” is taking place within the Budapest Design Week from October 3 to October 14, 2019, where Latvian design achievements are displayed, complimented by presentations of the best design experience stories. The promoter is Latvian Design Centre with a financial support from the Ministry of Culture of Latvia. The curator of the exhibition is Dita Danosa.

This year the Baltic States are the Guests of Honor at the Budapest Design Week, as a sign of Hungary’s general awareness and interest in The Baltic States. Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are represented at the joined exhibition Baltic Design Now, where each country forms its own part of the display. It is exposed at the prestigious Atellier Pro Arts Gallery in Budapest.
The goal of the exhibition is to display designs created in Latvia, which have been praised at national and international level over the past year. It provides an insight into the diverse nature of Latvian design, which has long gone beyond common design fields and their products. It has become a strategic tool that overcomes interdisciplinary challenges, creates new approaches and solutions, meantime enhancing economic growth and society’s welfare.
Latvian part of the exposition displays seven nationally and internationally recognized designs. The central spot is dedicated to the presentation of the installation Matter to Matter by Arthur Analt, created for the London Design Biennale, where it was awarded the Design Medal.
The scenography for the Latvian Design Achievement Exhibition was created by the Latvian Design Centre in collaboration with Arthur Analt as an extension of the mood of the Matter to Matter exhibition space, seeking to create a unique Latvian ambience formed by our climate and many forests. Photographs and descriptions of the Latvian design achievements are arranged on sheets of Latvian veneer, which are painted in the mood of Latvian forests. Paintings’ author is Tron Karton.
On October 5 the event “Baltic Design Today: designers’ experience stories” was organized to make the Baltic Design more recognizable. Latvia was represented by Arthurs Analts (Variant Studio), design studio H2E representative Dagnija Balode, campaign #Iamintrovert creative director Una Rozenbauma (Latvian Literature) and Dita Danosa, Head of the Latvian Design Centre.

Budapest design week takes place from October 4 to October 13, 2019, and is spread over 150 locations in Budapest and regions of Hungary, attracting more than 100,000 visitors. The Budapest Design Week is being organized since 2004. It is initiated by the Hungarian Design Council and is financially supported by the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office.
The Latvian Design Centre was launched in December 2018. The Ministry of Culture has initiated the establishment of the Latvian Design Centre. The tasks delegated to the Design Centre include representing and promoting Latvian design in our country and elsewhere in the world, gathering information in the field of design, communicating with various public audiences, providing consultations, coordinating cooperation between design ecosystem members, initiating and jointly implementing events.
